How Is Cloudflare Web Search Different from Tavily-Style Search APIs? A Comparison for October 2026

Cloudflare launched the Web Search API in October 2026. How does it differ from APIs like Tavily that combine search and content extraction? This article compares endpoints, response fields, filters, pricing, and use cases point by point using the official documentation.

Information date: 2026-10-05. This article only summarizes what is stated in the official Cloudflare and Tavily documentation. Both sets of documentation may change later, so refer to the official pages before adoption. This article does not compare which provider's search results are more accurate, and it does not conduct any quality testing.

Cloudflare announced the Web Search API on 2026-10-02, allowing Workers and AI Gateway users to perform web searches with a single API call. For people choosing a search API for an AI Agent, the most common question is: Is it the same kind of thing as search APIs like Tavily?

The short answer: Both let a program send a query and receive web results, but the depth of the returned content and the surrounding endpoints differ. The sections below explain the differences point by point.

The Difference in One Sentence

Cloudflare Web SearchTavily-Style Search API
PositioningA lightweight search endpoint that returns search-result links and descriptionsSearch results with content snippets and relevance, plus separate extraction, crawling, and site-map endpoints
Response highlightsurl, title, descriptiontitle, url, content, score, with optional answer, raw_content
Backend search providersCeramic, Exa, or Linkup can be selectedProvided by Tavily itself

I. Endpoints and Usage

Cloudflare Web Search (from the official documentation)

  • Call: POST https://api.cloudflare.com/client/v4/accounts/{account_id}/ai/websearch/, authenticated with a Cloudflare API token.
  • Request fields: query (1–1024 characters), options.gateway.id (AI Gateway ID, required), provider (ceramic by default, exa, or linkup), limit (1–10, default 10), and byokAlias (used when bringing your own key).
  • The documentation homepage says “Available in open beta”.

Tavily-Style API (Tavily official documentation)

  • Search: POST https://api.tavily.com/search, authenticated with a Bearer token.
  • Common fields: search_depth (basic costs 1 credit, advanced 2 credits), max_results (0–20, default 10), topic (general, news, finance), time_range (day, week, month, year), include_answer, include_raw_content, include_domains (up to 300), exclude_domains (up to 150), and chunks_per_source.
  • In addition to search, there are endpoints such as extract (extract content from specified URLs), crawl (crawl a website), and map (list a site's structure).

II. Response Fields

FieldCloudflare Web SearchTavily search
URL and titleAvailableAvailable
Summary / contentdescription (the documentation says Ceramic descriptions can be up to 8,000 characters)content (1–3 chunks according to chunks_per_source)
Relevance scoreNot listed in the documentationscore
Synthesized answerNot listed in the documentationOptional answer
Full textNot listed in the documentationOptional raw_content
Additional informationmetadata: query, requestId, latencyMsresponse_time, usage, and more

This means that if your Agent needs to know “which web pages were found,” Cloudflare's response may be enough; if you want curated snippets, scores, or an answer in a single call, Tavily-style fields are closer to that need. Conversely, the length of Cloudflare's description field varies by provider, so you decide whether to fetch the full text yourself.

III. Filtering Capabilities

  • Tavily-style API: topic (general / news / finance), time range, and specified or excluded domains are all request parameters.
  • Cloudflare Web Search: The documentation we read does not list topic, time-range, or domain-filter parameters; the adjustable options are the provider and the number of results (1–10). If your workflow needs to “look only at news from the past week” or “search only a few specific sites,” you need to handle that in the query string or post-processing yourself, or first confirm whether the provider supports it.

IV. Adjacent Endpoints

  • Tavily: In addition to search, extraction, crawling, and site maps each have their own endpoint, which suits a “search → read content” workflow.
  • Cloudflare: The documentation we read contains only the search endpoint. To read web-page content, you need to combine it with other Cloudflare products or your own fetching code.

V. Pricing (Official List Prices)

Cloudflare: Per 1,000 searches, depending on the provider—Ceramic US$0.25, Linkup US$5, and Exa US$7. When paying with AI Gateway credits, the documentation says “charged at the provider's list price, with no markup”; when bringing your own key (BYOK), the provider charges you directly. The documentation marks Ceramic and Linkup as retaining zero data, while Exa does not.

Tavily: Pricing is based on credits. The free plan includes 1,000 credits per month (no credit card required); pay-as-you-go is about US$0.008/credit; plan prices decrease with usage, down to about US$0.005/credit. A basic search costs 1 credit, and an advanced search costs 2 credits. Converted this way, a pay-as-you-go basic search is about US$8/1,000 searches. Extraction, map, and other endpoints have separate credit rules (for example, every 5 successfully extracted URLs with basic extraction equals 1 credit).

How to compare prices: The units differ between the two services, and so does the returned content. Cloudflare's per-call price appears lower, but it only returns links and descriptions; Tavily's per-call price includes content snippets and relevance, and can optionally include an answer. Comparing only the unit price overlooks the extra work you may still need to do yourself (fetching full text, ranking, and organizing); calculate the cost “per completed task” using your actual workflow.

VI. How to Choose: Look at Your Workflow

  • You only need a list of links, are cost-sensitive, and have high query volume: A lightweight endpoint such as Cloudflare Web Search is worth considering, while noting that the documentation currently labels it open beta.
  • You need content snippets, scores, answers, or time / topic / domain filters: Tavily-style API fields are a closer fit.
  • You need to “read full text after searching, crawl websites, and organize site structure”: Consider whether you prefer one service to cover all of it or to combine several tools yourself.
  • You already use Cloudflare Workers / AI Gateway: Cloudflare's integration and centralized billing are advantages, but you still need to confirm that the features meet your needs.
  • Data retention matters to you: Cloudflare's documentation identifies data retention for each provider and can inform your choice; for Tavily's data processing, see its official explanation.

VII. What This Article Does Not Answer

  • Which provider's results are more accurate: We did not compare the three Cloudflare providers with Tavily using the same question set, so we draw no conclusion. For an evaluation method, see our earlier article “How Do AI Search APIs Work? Evaluate Them with a 30-Question Test” (published in Traditional Chinese and Japanese): fix the question set, define the scoring rules first, and then test with your own questions.
  • Rate limits and stability: The Cloudflare documentation homepage does not list rate limits; Tavily's limits depend on the plan. Run your own load tests before launch.
  • Whether features will change: The Cloudflare Web Search documentation currently labels it open beta, so fields and prices may change.

FAQ

Can Cloudflare Web Search replace Tavily?

It depends on which features you use. If you only need “query → links and descriptions,” their uses overlap; if you use content, score, answer, raw_content, or extraction, crawling, and site-map endpoints, the current Cloudflare documentation has no corresponding features.

How much does Cloudflare Web Search cost?

Depending on the provider selected, 1,000 searches cost Ceramic US$0.25, Linkup US$5, or Exa US$7 (official documentation as of 2026-10-05). When using AI Gateway credits, they are charged at list price with no markup.

How is Tavily search priced?

It is priced in credits: a basic search costs 1 credit and an advanced search costs 2 credits; the free plan includes 1,000 credits per month, and pay-as-you-go is about US$0.008/credit (official documentation as of 2026-10-05).
