Grok API in Taiwan: How to Use It
xAI's Grok series has recently drawn attention for long-context and agentic tasks, and more Taiwanese developers are evaluating the Grok API. This article covers three things: how to use it, how much it costs, and whether you can get a Taiwan unified invoice for it.
Grok API vs. a Grok Subscription: Know the Difference
Grok subscription (X Premium+ / SuperGrok) = Access to Grok on the web and inside the X app
Grok API = Calling the model from your own code, billed per token
If you want to call the model from code, you need to buy the API, not a subscription. A subscription does not include API credits, and the API does not include the subscription's web features.
How Pricing Works
According to xAI's official pricing (checked September 2, 2026), the Grok API bills input and output tokens separately, and rates vary considerably between versions. Flagship long-context versions fall roughly in the range of $1 to $2 per million input tokens, and about $2 to $6 for output. Actual unit prices depend on the version and on whether reasoning (thinking) mode is enabled, so before purchasing, check the latest figures directly on the official pricing page.
A common way for Taiwanese developers to get started is through a compatible API platform, using a single key to call Grok, without opening a separate xAI account or binding a separate card:
| Grok versions on BazaarLink | Use |
|---|---|
| grok-4.6 / grok-4.5 | General conversation and reasoning, 500K-token context |
| grok-4.3 | 1M-token long context |
| grok-4.20 / grok-4.20-multi-agent | 2M-token ultra-long context, multi-agent tasks |
| grok-build-0.1 | Lightweight, development/build-oriented version |
| grok-4.7 | Text/image input, 500,000-token context |
| x-ai/grok-imagine-image-2.0 | Text/image input, image output |

Can You Get a Taiwan Unified Invoice for Grok?
As of the check date, no official explanation could be found.
xAI's official documentation (Billing, Invoices, API Billing FAQ) only says that billing address and tax information will appear on invoices. Unlike OpenAI, it has no "Taiwan VAT and eGUI" page, and it does not address how Taiwan unified invoices (GUI) are handled. The only sentence in the FAQ related to invoices is "cannot retroactively issue invoices." This is closer to the situation where Claude receipts do not count as unified invoices, but xAI has not stated it as clearly as Anthropic has.
What does this mean? It does not mean you definitely cannot get one; it only means the official documentation does not say so publicly. If your company requires a unified invoice before an expense can be booked, do not assume xAI can provide one until you have confirmed it.
Can the Grok Unified Business Number Be Entered? What About Expense Reports?
The Ministry of Finance publishes a public list, "Foreign e-commerce operators that have issued cloud invoices," which contains every foreign company that has completed Taiwan cross-border e-commerce tax registration (340 companies in total). Checked line by line on September 2, 2026, xAI is not on the list. This is not just "the official documentation doesn't say so"; xAI has not completed tax registration in Taiwan at all, so the checkout page has no Taiwan unified business number field, and there is no statutory obligation to collect business tax or issue cloud invoices. For comparison, OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and Alibaba Cloud are all on the list.
What about expense reports? The English receipt you get from paying by card on the official site can serve as internal supporting evidence for an expense. However, most companies' formal expense reporting processes only accept unified invoices: an English receipt cannot be used to deduct business tax, and it may not pass expense approval review. If your company requires a unified invoice for expense reports, go with Option 2 in the next section and buy through a Taiwan-based platform, which will issue an electronic unified invoice from a Taiwan company (with a business number; both two-part and three-part formats are available).
So What Should You Do?
Option 1: Pay Directly on the Official Site by Card
The xAI console accepts credit cards other than Taiwan dollar cards. The drawbacks are similar to other overseas services:
- Card risk controls: Taiwan corporate cards used overseas are often blocked by banks, and a failed automatic payment can suddenly disable the API.
- Unclear unified invoices: As noted above, there is no public Taiwan invoice policy from the official site.
- Exchange rate spread and fees.
Option 2: A Taiwan-Based API Platform
BazaarLink is an AI API platform operated by a Taiwan company (Jilian Technology Co., Ltd., unified business number 62232477):
- Pricing in Taiwan dollars, with electronic unified invoices issued (both two-part and three-part formats), so accounting can book them directly
- OpenAI-compatible API, with one key shared across Grok, Claude, GPT, Gemini, and more
- Monthly corporate billing can be arranged, and it is not affected by credit card risk controls
- Compatible with development tools such as Codex CLI, Cursor, and Claude Code
curl https://bazaarlink.ai/api/v1/chat/completions \
-H "Authorization: Bearer sk-bl-YOUR_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"model": "x-ai/grok-4.6", "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Hello"}]}'
But be clear about when this is not a good fit:
- If you want Grok features inside the X app or the SuperGrok subscription → that is a subscription product, and the API cannot replace it
- If you are just testing and your usage is very small → paying directly on the official site is fine, and there is no need to buy through another channel
- If you have confirmed through another channel that xAI can issue a Taiwan unified invoice → follow the official reply you received

FAQ
Is Grok API always more expensive than a subscription?
Not necessarily; it depends on usage. The API is billed per token, so you pay for what you use, with no fixed monthly fee. A subscription is a fixed monthly fee, and once your allowance runs out you have to wait for it to reset. If you use the web features steadily over long periods, a subscription is usually the better deal; if you are writing code that calls the model, you need the API anyway.
If I want to use Grok alongside other models, how can I manage that more easily?
If you use Grok, Claude, and GPT at the same time, that means three vendors and three bills. Calling all of them through one compatible API platform with a single key keeps financial reconciliation and usage management simpler.
Can I enter a Grok unified business number?
No, it can't be entered. According to the Ministry of Finance list of 'foreign e-commerce operators that have issued cloud invoices' (checked September 2, 2026), xAI has not completed cross-border e-commerce tax registration in Taiwan, so checkout has no Taiwan unified business number field and you only get an English receipt. To get a unified invoice with a business number, you need to buy Grok API through a Taiwan-based platform.
Can a Grok receipt be used for expense reporting?
Only as internal supporting evidence for an expense. An English receipt is not a unified invoice, so it cannot be used to deduct business tax, and most companies' formal expense approval processes will not accept it. If you need to file an expense report, buy through a Taiwan-based platform that can issue a unified invoice from a Taiwan company.
