Cancel Subscription & Refund: Claude, ChatGPT 2026
Cancel Claude or ChatGPT and get refunds: steps for web, Apple and Google billing, Claude's no-refund policy, Taiwan's 7-day cancellation-right exceptions.
Can't find the cancel button? Check your receipt first: did you pay through the service's website, the Apple App Store, or Google Play? Cancelling renewal must be done through the original purchase channel. Refunds depend on the service's own request process, so don't merge the two into one step.
This article reflects official guidance as checked on 2026-09-17 and mainly covers personal ChatGPT and Claude subscriptions. Deleting the app is not the same as cancelling, and requesting a refund is not the same as turning off renewal.
ChatGPT Cancel Renewal: Find the Entry Point by Payment Channel
| Purchase channel | Cancellation entry point | What to check if you can't find it |
|---|---|---|
| chatgpt.com | Account menu → Settings → Billing → Cancel plan | Whether you are logged into the ChatGPT account that originally subscribed |
| Apple App Store | iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → ChatGPT → Cancel Subscription | Whether you are logged into the Apple ID used for the purchase; if an expiry date is shown and there is no cancel button, it may already be cancelled |
| Google Play | Subscriptions in Google Play → ChatGPT → Cancel subscription | Whether you are using the Google account used for the purchase, not another phone account |
| Self-serve Business | Workspace settings → Billing → Manage plan → Cancel subscription | Whether the workspace owner is the one performing the action |
Entry points follow the OpenAI cancellation guide. Generally, after cancelling you can use the service until the end of the current billing period, and OpenAI recommends cancelling at least 24 hours before the next charge. If a refund is approved, the usage rights covered by the refund may end early, so don't treat "cancelling never takes effect immediately" as a general rule.
In addition, per the Pro official guide, starting 2026-09-10 OpenAI has paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the US$200 Pro plan. Existing users who cancel or downgrade may not be able to immediately repurchase the same plan once their current plan ends. Before stopping this plan, check your account and OpenAI's latest announcements.
Claude Cancel Renewal
Per the Claude official cancellation guide:
| Purchase channel | Cancellation entry point |
|---|---|
| Web or Claude Desktop | Bottom-left name/initials → Settings → Billing → Cancel |
| iOS | Initials at top right → Billing → Manage subscription; you can also go to Apple subscription management |
| Android | Initials at top right → Billing → Manage subscription; you can also go to Google Play subscription management |
The official guidance is likewise to cancel at least 24 hours before the next charge; cancellation generally takes effect at the end of the current billing period. After cancelling, check that renewal is off and the end date is shown. Don't just check whether the app still works.
Where to Request a Refund? Don't Treat Apple and Google as the Same
| Service and payment channel | How to request a refund |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT website | Log into the charged account and submit through the OpenAI Help Center chat |
| ChatGPT Google Play | Per OpenAI's current guidance, likewise submit through the OpenAI Help Center chat |
| ChatGPT Apple | Apply to Apple; Apple reviews the request |
| Claude website | Log into account → Get help → Claude Refund Request in the message flow |
| Claude Apple | Apply to Apple; Anthropic cannot refund App Store payments |
| Claude Android | Contact Claude Support for review; provide the purchase account and the necessary GPA order information |
The latest refund guide from ChatGPT is the basis for this table. You cannot substitute "I bought it in a store, so I refund through the store." Payments are generally non-refundable. For unused personal subscriptions, contact them within seven days of the charge; discretionary review may be granted under certain conditions, and this is not an unconditional refund. Billing errors, unauthorized charges, service failures, and refunds required by law are subject to separate conditions.
Claude's refund guide is also premised on a general no-refund policy plus consumer-terms or legal exceptions. The fourteen-day arrangement for the EEA/UK should not be applied directly to Taiwan, but it also cannot be concluded that Taiwanese consumers never have any refund rights.
What to Prepare Before Applying
- The account used for the charged service, and the Apple/Google account used for the actual purchase.
- The receipt, order or invoice number, charge date and amount.
- The reason for the request, such as a duplicate charge, an unauthorized transaction or inability to use the service, with verifiable records attached.
- Whether renewal is currently turned off. After the refund is complete, confirm the payment and usage status again.
The billing email may differ from the login account. If you can't find the subscription, first check your login method. Do not create a second subscription through another channel just to "buy it again."
Taiwan's Seven-Day Cancellation Right: Exceptions Exist, but Not All AI Subscriptions Are Automatically Excluded
The Consumer Protection Act's cancellation right for distance transactions has statutory exceptions. Article 2 of the Applicable Criteria sets out situations such as digital content or certain online services, and involves prior-consent and business-disclosure conditions. You cannot conclude that the seven-day cancellation right does not apply in Taiwan simply because a product is called an "AI subscription."
If there is a dispute, keep the purchase page, consent records, service delivery records and refund correspondence, and confirm the individual case with a consumer service center or a professional. This article explains the cancellation and request paths; it does not predict the legal outcome of any individual transaction.
Before Stopping the Monthly Fee, Confirm Which Features You Want to Keep
Pay-as-you-go API billing suits programmatic integration, batch work or fluctuating usage, but it cannot fully replace the official chat interface and subscription tools. For consistently high usage, first compare subscription quotas with actual API usage. There is no universal conclusion that "the API is always cheaper."
If a company wants to switch purchasing channels because of invoice issues, also verify the actual product, buyer details and transaction documents. OpenAI has conditional guidance on Taiwan eGUI, so you should not assume all personal subscriptions only yield overseas receipts. The AI API expense reporting guide covers this distinction separately; for price comparisons, see the ChatGPT pricing and Codex pricing.
FAQ
Will deleting the ChatGPT or Claude app stop the charges?
No. Turn off renewal through the original purchase channel, and confirm the cancellation status and end date. If you request a refund, also confirm separately that the subscription has been cancelled.
I bought ChatGPT through Google Play. Who do I ask for a refund?
According to OpenAI's official explanation as checked on 2026-09-17, log into the ChatGPT account that was charged and submit the refund request through the OpenAI Help Center chat. Cancelling renewal still goes through Google Play. Purchases made through Apple are refunded by Apple, which reviews the request.
Am I always entitled to a refund within seven days of a ChatGPT charge?
No. For unused personal subscriptions, OpenAI offers discretionary review under certain conditions; it is not an unconditional seven-day refund. Other legal or billing exceptions are assessed separately based on eligibility.
For Claude on Android, must I always go through Google for a refund?
Under Claude's current official process, contact Claude Support for review and provide the relevant purchase information. Refunds for the iOS App Store are handled by Apple.
Are Taiwan AI subscriptions always excluded from the seven-day cancellation right?
They cannot be excluded across the board. Digital content and certain online services have statutory exceptions, along with conditions for disclosure and prior consent. Confirm against the actual transaction; do not judge by the product name alone.
